Description
In the early morning hours of November 29, 1864, Colonel John M. Chivington and about seven hundred soldiers of the Third Colorado Volunteer Militia attacked a band of approximately five hundred Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians camped along Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado. This perhaps the only unarguable fact concerning this incident, which has become one of the most controversial Indian conflicts in American history. Press reports immediately following the military engagement praised it as a major victory and the participants were hailed as heroes in a victory parade. As details of the event spread, a public outcry arose among many, especially those living in the eastern United States. Disagreement and personal opinion extends to even the name of the attack. Those who believe full responsibility lies with colonel Chivington call the attack "the Chivington massacre," while those who think that his actions were justified refer to it as "the Battle of Sand Creek."
