Description
The early 1800s witnessed settlers from the United States invading Native American lands on the eastern Colorado plains. Native Americans claimed these lands by primacy of habitation and by treaty, but fertile farmlands and mineral wealth attracted more settlers, and bloody confrontations between the invaders and the Native Americans resulted. These reasons coupled with personal and political goals sparked an attack on November 26, 1864, against Cheyennes and Arapahos camped at Sand Creek under territorial and military protection. Over three hundred Native Americans were slaughtered and mutilated. Investigation into this issue utilized scholarly works and extensive analysis of primary sources, such as military and governmental documents, period newspapers and personal accounts. Research suggested circumstances and attitudes that fostered the slaughter were manipulated by territorial authorities in a deliberate attempt to bring about the extermination of the Cheyennes and Arapahos from Colorado.
